Cairns & Dive on the Great Barrier Reef

After a free camp night on the beautiful Ellis beach, it is now time to discover Cairns. Ready to go, excited about it, we started… hearing a bad noise in the car’s engine. Oh gosh, the oil signal was red on the dashboard, bad news, the engine was running out of oil, or I mean, it is what we guessed. Après une nouvelle nuit de camping sur la belle plage d’Ellis, il est temps d’aller découvrir Cairns. Prêt à y aller, surexcités, nous avons commencé par… entendre un bruit inquiétant dans le moteur de la voiture. Mince, le signal de l’huile était rouge sur le tableau de bord, oh oh mauvaise nouvelle, le moteur était à court d’huile, ou plutôt, c’est ce que nous supposions.

We stopped alongside the road, we put a bit of oil (we had to change it anyway) and we started again. 200 meters farther, we heard the same noise. Holy crap… This is really bad. We stopped twice and we put the whole bottle of oil. Hopefully, we were lucky to be near Smithfield, an industrial zone where there were a Kmart auto repairs. Saved! Or not… :/ They could not fix our problem (oil and filter change) until 2 weeks. What the hell. Once again, we were lucky, there was a Bridgestone 600 meters from where we were. They could fix it the following morning. Therefore, as it was 9am in the morning, we stayed the whole day on the industrial zone, avoiding moving the car, it was not advised, BCF, McDonalds, Pet shops, Mall center.. ahah we found occupation in browsing in all the stores around. We even had the ‘chance’ to sleep in our tent in front of Bridgestone. Ahah quite an experience. Hopefully, it happened to us while we were close to a garage, and not in Cape Tribulation in the middle of the rainforest. The cost wouldn’t have been the same. Nous nous sommes arrêtés le long de la route, nous avons remis un peu d’huile (nous devions la changer de toute façon) et nous avons réessayé. 200 mètres plus loin, nous avons entendu le même bruit. M***e ! Ca ne sent pas bon! Nous nous sommes arrêtés 2 fois et nous avons mis la bouteille en entier. Heureusement, nous avons quand même été chanceux car nous étions proche de la zone industrielle de Smithfield où il y avait un Kmart auto repairs. Sauvés !... ou pas, ils ne pouvaient pas nous prendre d’ici 2 semaines. Punaise ! Une fois encore, nous avons été chanceux puisqu’il y avait un Bridgestone à 600 mètres d’où nous étions et ils pouvaient régler le problème le lendemain matin. Du coup, comme il était 9h du matin, nous sommes restés sur la zone industrielle toute la journée afin d’éviter de bouger la voiture vu que ce n’était pas conseillé. BCF, McDonalds, animalerie, centre commerciaux… Nous avons trouvé de quoi nous occuper ahah. On a même eu la « chance » de dormir en face de Bridgestone, comme des romanos ^^. Sacrée expérience. Heureusement, cela nous est arrivé près de garages et non au beau milieu de la forêt tropicale de Cape Tribulation. Ça n’aurait pas été la même histoire !!

After having fixed the problem, which was the oil and filter change, we could start visiting Cairns and around. First, we chose to visit Kuranda and its forest. There was an historical market deep in that forest with artcraft, food, and even a koala center. Then, we went to see the scenic railway and the waterfalls. Impressive long waterfall. Après avoir fixé le problème, qui n’était qu’un changement d’huile et de filter, nous pouvions commencer à visiter Cairns et ses alentours. Nous avons choisi de visiter Kuranda et sa forêt. Il y avait un marché historique au beau milieu de la forêt avec des artisans, de la nourriture et même un centre pour câliner des koalas. Ensuite, nous sommes allés voir une ancienne voie de chemin de fer avec sa cascade. Une impressionnante et interminable cascade.

Then, we booked a cruise tour for the following day to dive and snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef. I was expecting a lot from that amazing dive. Ensuite, nous avons réservé un tour en bateau pour le jour suivant afin d’aller faire une plongée en bouteille et du masque-tuba sur la Grande Barrière de Corail. J’en attendais beaucoup de cette plongée.

We had to be at the boat terminal at 7 am sharp, to sail to the spot. In the early morning, it was raining, but after 1 hour and a half of boat to reach the Northern side of the Great Barrier Reef, the sun came and clouds was chased out. However, the wind was pretty strong and the waves as well. Antoine got sick the all day long. Hard time for him, but he enjoyed the dive as I did. The corals, the fishes, the turtles… all these colours were amazing. It was hard to be focused on one spot as there was so much to see down there. This dive was a pure beauty even if our instructor was not really passionate anymore about diving on that fantastic spot… That’s a shame. Nous devions être prêts au Terminal à 7h du matin pétantes afin de naviguer jusqu’au spot. Tôt ce matin, il pleuvait, mais après une heure et demie de bateau pour atteindre la section extérieure nord de la Grande barrière de Corail, le soleil a pointé le bout de son nez pour chasser tous les nuages. Cependant, le vent était assez fort, et les vagues aussi. Antoine fut malade toute la journée. Dur moment pour lui mais il a quand même bien profité de la plongée. Les coraux, les poissons, les tortues… Toutes ces couleurs étaient époustouflantes. C’était dur de se concentrer sur un seul spot parce qu’il y avait tellement à voir, on ne savait pas où donner de la tête. Cette plongée était magnifique même si notre instructeur n’était plus réellement passionné par ses multiples plongées sur ce spot fantastique. Très dommage.

After a quick lunch (only for me ahah), we jumped again in the water on the second spot of the day for snorkeling. Again, so much to see while swimming among fishes and corals. This full day was amazing and we were so lucky to have a good weather on the diving and snorkeling spots because when we came back to Cairns, it was grey and rainy. Après un déjeuner rapide (seulement pour moi ahah), nous avons de nouveau plonger dans cette eau translucide au second spot de la journée pour du masque-tuba. Une fois encore, beaucoup de choses à voir en nageant entre les coraux et les poissons. Cette journée était superbe et nous avons été très chanceux d’avoir beau temps. C’était mal partit au début. Quand nous sommes revenus à Carins, grisaille et pluie…

What a day, after a long and hot shower at our hotel (no camping for tonight, it was way too rainy), we were starving so we decided to head Cairns city center to enjoy a fish and chips. So yummy! Quelle journée!! Après une longue douche chaude à notre hôtel (nous n’avons pas campé cette nuit-là, il pleuvait beaucoup trop) nous étions affamés, donc nous avons décidé d’aller manger un super fish and chips en ville. On s’est régalés !

The following day, we enjoyed visiting Cairns but not that much because the weather was still so so… We still saw the lagoon, the esplanade and the famous fruit Rusty’s market: Amazing tropical fruits for cheap prices. Worth the visit, even just to taste the exotic fruits. Le jour suivant, nous en avons profité pour visiter Cairns et son centre-ville mais pas plus que ça car le temps n’était toujours pas avec nous. Nous avons quand même vu le lagon, l’esplanade, et le célèbre Rusty’s market où est vendu d’excellents fruits exotiques pas chers du tout. Ça valait le coup, même juste pour se balader et bien évidemment goûter aux fruits.
