Inle Lake

Good morning all, did you sleep well? I hope because we had quite a disturbed night last night. As I was telling you in the previous post, we left Hsipaw by minivan by night in order to go to Inle Lake, southeast of Mandalay. We had the worst journey ever in Myanmar. First, the minivan was full, overfull, over overfull. I did not know that we could pack a van like this. Then, the driver was driving really bad, overpassing cars not really safely, braking too much, speeding too much… Wow that was a bit scary. We even stopped two times in the middle of nowhere to water the engine and the brakes because they were too hot. We also had to go to the toilet in the nature, in a dark night… The seats were deeply uncomfortable and the people chatted loudly all night long. Everything was combined to spend a bad night ahah. Bonjour, est-ce que vous avez bien dormi? J’espère parce que nous n’avons pas beaucoup dormi la nuit précédente. Comme je vous le disais dans l’article précédent, nous avons quitté Hsipaw en minivan de nuit pour aller au lac Inle, au Sud-Est de Mandalay. Nous avons eu le pire trajet jamais eu en Birmanie. Premièrement, le minivan était plein à craquer, même plus que plein. Je ne savais pas qu’on pouvait remplir un van autant. Ensuite, le conducteur conduisait vraiment mal, dépassant des voitures dangereusement, freinant trop fort, accélérant trop brutalement… Wow, ça faisait flipper. Nous nous sommes même arrêtés 2 fois au beau milieu de nulle part pour arroser le moteur et les freins qui chauffaient trop. Nous devions également aller aux toilettes dans la nature dans le noir… Les sièges étaient tellement inconfortables et les gens dans le minivan ont discuté super fort toute la nuit. Tout était réuni pour que nous passions la pire des nuits ahah

We arrived in Nyaungshwe at 5 am in the morning, we checked-in quickly at our hotel Imana Grand Hotel to go straight to bed. We were really tired after this crazy night. After a few hours of sleep and a great breakfast, we were enough in a good shape to take the free bikes of the hotel to have cycling tour around Inle Lake. We started from the East side and then we crossed the lake by boat (with the bikes on the boat yes!) to come back to the hotel from the west side. We loved cycling, it has been such a long time since we did not ride a bike. The scenery was really nice as well. We forgot the bad night we just spent. We ended the day by having a great dinner in a small local restaurant. This was delicious. Nous sommes arrivés à Nyaungshwe à 5h du matin, nous nous enregistré à l’hôtel Imana Grand rapidement pour aller directement au lit. Nous étions vraiment fatigués après cette folle nuit. Après quelques heures de sommeil et un bon petit-déjeuner, nous étions en assez bonne forme pour enjamber les vélos gratuits de l’hôtel pour aller pédaler autour du lac Inle. Nous avons commencé par le côté Est et puis nous avons traversé le lac en bateau (avec les vélos sur le bateau oui) pour revenir à l’hôtel par le côté ouest. Nous avons adoré faire du vélo, ça faisait tellement longtemps. Le paysage était vraiment chouette également. Nous oublions la sale nuit que nous venions de passer. Nous avons terminé la journée en dînant dans un petit restaurant local, c’était délicieux.

Second day in Inle Lake, we decided to do a day trip by boat. We met two girls from Switzerland in the train to go to Hsipaw and then they were in the same shit minivan from Hsipaw to Inle Lake. We decided to do the boat trip together to share the price of a boat. Our boat was 28000 kyats for one full day. This trip was really cheap and easy to book with our hotel. Deuxième jour au lac Inle, nous avons décidé de se faire une journée bateau. Nous avons rencontré 2 filles de Suisse dans le train pour aller à Hsipaw et elles étaient dans le même minivan de m**** de Hsipaw jusqu’au lac Inle. Nous avons décidé de faire cette journée ensemble pour partager le prix du bateau. Pour la journée entière, nous devions payer 28000 kyats. Ce trip n’était vraiment pas cher et facile à réserver avec notre hôtel.

Along the day trip, we saw so many things, the traditional fishermen on their typical boats, two temples, silver jewels makers, giraffe women, lotus silk maker, cigars makers, a floating garden and floating villages. We also had a wonderful lunch in one of the floating restaurant. Au cours de la journée, nous avons vu beaucoup de choses, les pêcheurs traditionnels sur leur bateau typiques, deux temples, des producteurs de bijoux en argent, une femme girafe, un producteur de soie de lotus, des producteurs de cigares, un jardin flottant et des villages flottants. Nous avons également déjeuné dans un restaurant flottant.

The negative point was the fishermen and the giraffe women. First the fishermen, because they were just showing us their balance for us to take pictures and then asking for money. This was a bit disappointing. Secondly, it was impressive to watch the giraffe women with her long neck. This tradition is insane as she can carry to 8kgs on her neck, wrists and knees. We have been told that she carries those bronze rings to protect herself from tigers’ attacks. The giraffe women was sewing a silk scarf but she looked a bit sad because it seems that she is doing that everyday all day long and people come and leave, take pictures of her. I felt sad, uncomfortable and sorry for that. Le point négatif de cette journée a été les pêcheurs et la femme girafe. Premièrement les pêcheurs, parce qu’ils étaient là uniquement pour nous montrer leur équilibre afin que nous puissions les prendre en photos et ensuite nous demander de l’argent. C’était assez décevant. Deuxièmement, c’était impressionnant de voir cette femme girafe avec son long coup. Cette tradition est dingue puisqu’elle peut être amenée à porter jusque 8 kilos sur son cou, ses poignets et ses genoux. On nous a expliqué qu’elle porte ces anneaux de bronze pour se protéger des attaques de tigres. La femme girafe était en train de tisser une écharpe de soie mais elle avait l’air très triste parce que j’avais l’impression qu’elle faisait la même chose tous les jours. Les gens venaient la voir, prendre des photos d’elle et repartaient. Je me suis sentie triste pour elle, inconfortable et désolée pour tout ça.

Apart from those special moments, the trip was really cool. We had a really good group the 4 of us and our driver was quiet but nice as well. The girls were leaving in the evening but we had another day ahead of us. Therefore, we tried a crazy restaurant, an Indian food restaurant held by a guy fan of Eminem. When I say a fan, he had the same attitude. That was hilarious! We spent a funny night and the food was delicious as well. A part ces deux moments particuliers, le trip était vraiment cool. Nous avions un super groupe, tous les 4 et notre conducteur. Il était très silencieux mais sympa. Les filles partaient le soir même mais nous, nous avions encore une journée devant nous. Du coup, nous avons essayé un restaurant assez fou, servant de la nourriture indienne mais tenu par un mec fan du chanteur américain Eminem. Quand je dis fan, il en avait même l’attitude identique. C’était hilarant ! On s’est bien marré cette nuit-là et les plats étaient délicieux aussi.

Last day around Inle Lake, we took the bikes again and visited the surroundings. We enjoyed the super view of a lookout in the mountain, near a temple. The view of the lake, the bridge, the floating villages and restaurants, stunning! Then, we walked a bit on the teak bridge to feel the atmosphere of the fishermen, the locals, the tourists, the boat drivers… We enjoyed coming back to the hotel pretty early to have lunch in a local restaurant. We learned how they made their ‘Tanaka’. This is a product extracted from Tanaka wood used on the face for sun protection and beauty. This smells really good. The, we finished the day by enjoying the icy-cold water of pool of our hotel. The weather was really hot, so we appreciated a lot. Dernier jour autour du lac Inle, nous avons repris les vélos et continué de visiter les alentours. Nous avons profité d’un super point de vue niché dans la montagne à côté d’un temple. Le vue du lac, du pont, des villages et restaurants flottants étaient épatante ! Ensuite, nous avons marché un peu sur le pont en teak pour être au milieu des pêcheurs, des locaux, des touristes et des conducteurs de bateau… Nous avons profité de revenir à l’hôtel assez tôt pour déjeuner dans un restaurant local. Nous avons appris comment était fait leur « Tanaka ». C’est un produit extrait du bois de Tanaka qu’ils utilisent sur leur visage pour se protéger du soleil et comme soin beauté. Ca sent vraiment bon. Enfin, nous avons terminé la journée en profitant de la piscine de notre hôtel à l’eau froide, très froide. Il faisait très chaud donc la fraicheur de l’eau était quand même bien appréciée.

The last morning, we caught the bus to go back to Mandalay where we had our flight to Laos the day after. We lived our last 8 hours of bus in Myanmar and the scenery was amazing again. We had such a great time in Myanmar, we loved the kindness of the Myanmar people, the beauty of the landscape, the country itself. This is one of the best one for the moment. Take care I&A Dernière matinée, nous avons pris le bus de retour à Mandalay où nous prenions notre avions pour le Laos le jour d’après. Nous avons vécu nos 8 dernières heures de bus en Birmanie et les paysages étaient toujours aussi beaux que le premier jour. Nous avons tellement passé de bons moments en Birmanie, nous avons aimé la gentillesse des birmans, la beauté des paysages, le pays en lui-même. Ce pays est notre préféré pour le moment.
