Luang Prabang and Kuang Si Falls

Hi there, as I was telling you, we left Don Det island to Luang Prabang. It means 25 hours of boat/bus/pick-up truck/minivan. What a trip to go from South of Laos to the North. Lucky we are, we left Don Det with heavy rains, the small wood boat was full of water and we were close to sink at every curves ahah and then a bus from Don Det to Pakse, then another sleeping bus from Pakse to Vientiane where we met two people from Argentina and Brazil, super nice. Then, a transfer from one bus station to another one in Vientiane, then a minivan from Vientiane to somewhere else half way to Vang Vieng, then a bus from that previous spot to Vang Vieng and finally, FINALLY the last minivan from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang. Oh my god, it has been one of the longest journey we have done yet in our Asian trips. In total, 1 boat + 3 buses + 1 pick-up truck + 2 minivans to reach Luang Prabang. Ahah hope it is going to worth it ahah. Coucou par ici, comme je vous le disais, nous sommes partis de Don Det pour Luang Prabang. Cela signifie 25 heures de bateau/bus/camion pick-up/minivan. Quel trajet pour rejoindre le Nord du Laos depuis le Sud. Chanceux que nous sommes, nous avons quitté Don Det sous une pluie torrentielle, le petit bateau en bois était plein d’eau et nous étions prêt du naufrage à chaque courbe ou virages ahah. Puis, nous avons pris un bus de Don Det à Pakse, ensuite un autre bus de nuit de Pakse à Vientiane où nous avons rencontré deux personnes d’Argentine et du Brésil, super sympas. Ensuite, un transfert d’une station de bus à une autre à Vientiane, ensuite un minivan de Vientiane à un endroit au milieu de nulle part à mi-chemin jusque Vang Vieng, ensuite un bus de cet endroit à Vang Vieng et ENFIN un dernier minivan de Vang Vieng jusque Luang Prabang. Oh mon dieu, c’est le trajet le plus long qu’on ait jamais fait dans notre road trip en Asie ! Au total, 1 bateau + 3 bus + 1 camion pick-up + 2 minivans pour rejoindre Luang Prabang ahah J’espère que ça va valoir le coup ahah

Luang Prabang

We were so happy to have arrived! Even if we were pretty tired, we still went for diner at the night market which was 5 min by walking from our guesthouse, so cool. With this first night and the atmosphere we felt there, we knew that we were going to love that town. Indeed, we did!! Nous étions tellement contents d’être arrives! Même si nous étions quand même bien fatigués, nous sommes quand même sortis pour diner au marché de nuit à 5 minutes à pied de notre guesthouse, so cool. Avec cette première nuit et l’ambiance que nous y avons ressentie, nous savions que nous allions aimer cette ville. Et en effet, nous l’avons aimé !!

The following morning, Antoine rested a bit in the hotel because he was tired. I took a little bit of time alone (sometimes it is great because being 24/7 with the same person can get you crazy ahah). I visited the market where I saw so crazy stuff like alive bamboo rats on fish’s displays, larvae and buffalo weather to be eaten as snacks. That was unusual compared to the other markets I have been before. Then I walked along the Mekong River, it was pretty peaceful. Le matin suivant, Antoine est resté se reposer un peu à l’hôtel parce qu’il était fatigué. Je me suis pris un peu de temps à moi toute seule (parfois ça fait du bien car être avec la même personne 24h/24 7 jours sur 7 peut vous rendre un peu fou l’un de l’autre). J’en ai profité pour aller visiter le marché où j’ai vu des trucs de fou comme les rats de bambou vivants sur des étalages de poissons, des larves, du cuir de buffalo à manger en tant que snacks. Ce n’était pas commun comparé aux autres marchés où j’étais allée avant. Ensuite, je me suis baladée le long du Mékong, c’était très reposant.

Then, Antoine joined me and we climbed a hill to have a view of the city. There was a temple at the top. Then, we walk along a beautiful street with cute shops and cafes. We decided to go for lunch at a recommended restaurant on our travelling book Lonely Planet. To reach the restaurant, we had to cross the river on a bamboo bridge. Doing this is only possible from November to April because otherwise with the rainy season, the bamboo bridge is destroyed. To help people to rebuild the bamboo bridge every year, we had to pay a fee but it was really nothing, like 1.40€ for two people. Then, just on the other side of the river, the restaurant…. The area was quiet, surrounded with bamboos. The setting was super nice with low typical tables and we were sitting on pillows on the floors. So great. We ordered, fried rice and a mango sticky rice for me and Antoine ordered fried rice with Lao sausage. The food was delicious. One of the best one we ate in Laos. It was more expensive than the other local restaurant but it was worth the price and the view above the river. Ensuite, Antoine m’a rejoint et nous avons gravi une petite colline pour avoir une vue de la ville. Il y avait même un temps tout en haut. Ensuite, nous nous sommes baladés le long d’une très belle rue avec des boutiques très mignonnes et des cafés. Nous nous sommes décidés à aller manger dans un restaurant recommandé par notre guide Lonely Planet. Pour aller à ce restaurant, nous devions traverser la rivière sur un pont en bambou. Faire cette traversée n’est seulement possible qu’ente Novembre et Avril puisque pendant la saison des pluies, le pont est détruit par les eaux. Afin d’aider les personnes à reconstruire le pont chaque année, une petite taxe est appliquée pour pouvoir le traverser mais cela ne représente pas grand-chose : 1,40€ pour 2 personnes. Ensuite, sur l’autre rive, nous avons trouvé le restaurant en question… L’endroit était silencieux, entouré de bambous. La décoration était ultra sympa avec des tables basses typiques et des coussins sur le sol pour s’y asseoir. Vraiment chouette. Nous avons commandé un riz sauté et un riz collant mangue pour moi et un riz sauté et une saucisse Lao pour Antoine. La nourriture était délicieuse. L’un des meilleurs restaurants que l’on ait fait au Laos. C’était un peu plus cher que d’autres restaurants locaux mais ça valait le coup rien que pour la vue sur la rivière.

We finished the day by walking around the city through temples, quiet and beautiful street under the shadows of palm trees, we loved again the atmosphere. We rented a scooter as we were going to need one the following day, and we went to Utopia. My best friend with her wife went there before and they told me that it was a must-do. The way to find the bar was not easy but I have no regret to have followed their advice. The bar was very original, you could choose to sit down on chairs, on deck chairs, on mattresses, on pillows. There were many options with a view on the river. To have a fresh mango smoothie, a cold beer and a pizza there while watching the sunset was perfect to end the afternoon. Nous avons terminé la journée en marchant dans la ville à travers des temples, des rues belles et calmes sous l’ombre de palmiers, nous avons une nouvelle fois adoré l’atmosphère de la ville. Nous avons loué un scooter comme nous en avions besoin d’un le lendemain, nous en avons profité pour aller à Utopia. Mon meilleur ami et sa femme étaient allés là-bas avant et m’avaient conseillé d’absolument y aller. Le chemin pour trouver cet endroit n’était pas simple mais nous n’avons pas été déçus de suivre leur conseil. Le bar était très original, on pouvait choisir de s’asseoir sur des chaises, sur des transats, des matelas, des coussins. Il y avait plusieurs options avec toujours vue sur la rivière. Finir l’après-midi avec un smoothie mangue, une bière fraiche et une pizza était plus que parfait.

We finished that visiting day by going to the night market and taking more time to see what they were selling like handcrafted souvenirs, coffee, and cakes... Guess which one or ones we picked. It was so hard as there were too many choice ahah Nous avons terminé cette journée de visite par le marché de nuit en prenant plus le temps de voir ce qu’il se vendait comme des souvenirs faits à la main, du café, des gâteaux… Devinez lequel ou lesquels nous avons pris. C’était trop dur, il y avait beaucoup trop de choix ahah.

Kuang Si Falls

This morning, we woke up early because we have been told that to see the Kuang Si fall while being alone, we needed to be there super early. Then, after our great morning breakfast, we jumped on our scooter to ride the 30 kilometers between our guesthouse and the Kuang Si Falls. Indeed, we arrived there and there were no one, it was 7am in the morning ahah however, we were ALONE. It was so great. Why the Kuang Si falls are famous? It is because of their blue turquoise color waterfalls, icy-cold but still blue turquoise color ahah. Ce matin, nous nous sommes levés tôt car on nous avait conseillé d’aller voir les chutes d’eau Kuang tôt afin d’être tranquilles, donc nous devions y être aux aurores. Donc, après notre très bon petit-déjeuner, nous avons sauté sur le scooter pour parcourir les 30 kilomètres entre notre gueshouse et les chutes Kuang Si. En effet, nous sommes arrivés là-bas et il n’y avait personne, il était 7h du matin en même temps ahah. Cependant, nous étions SEULS. C’était trop cool. Pourquoi les chutes Kuang Si sont-elles à voir? Parce qu’elles sont de couleurs turquoises, glacées mais bleu turquoise quand même ahah.

So we enjoyed a swim alone, it was so cool/cold. Then, from 9pm (time of the organized guided tour), people started arriving and it never stopped. We were so happy to have enjoyed this moment alone before. Then, we decided to climb the waterfall. As it was a tough one, it was quieter than down there. We had an amazing view of the valley, stunning. We even went further to the source of the waterfall where a small restaurant was set up. It was also really nice to have a swim up there. Antoine enjoyed playing Tarzan with a rope ahah and obviously having a fresh drink. Along the way, there were butterflies everywhere, with colours I have never seen before. Not surprisingly, there was a butterfly’s center on the way back to Luang Prabang, but I don’t think it was worth it to go, they were already so many outside, and alive! Du coup, nous nous sommes baignés seuls, c’était vraiment cool/froid. Ensuite, à partir de 9h (heure où les tours organisés débarquent), les gens ont commencé à affluer et ça ne s’est pas arrêté. Nous étions trop contents d’avoir eu notre moment à nous juste avant. Ensuite, nous avons décidé de grimper en haut de la cascade. Comme c’était assez dur, il y avait beaucoup moins de monde qu’en bas. Nous avons pu profiter d’une superbe vue de la vallée, épatant. Nous sommes même allés plus loin à la source de la cascade où un petit restaurant s’était monté. C’était également cool de se baigner ici aussi. Antoine a joué à être Tarzan avec une corde ahah et évidemment avoir une bonne boisson fraiche. Sur la chemin, il y a avait des papillons partout avec des couleurs que je n’avais jamais vu auparavant. Sans surprise, il y avait aussi un centre de papillon sur notre route retour vers Luang Prabang, mais je ne suis pas sure que ça vaille le coup, ils étaient déjà bien assez nombreux libres dehors et vivants !

Near the Kuang Si falls, there was a rescue center for moon bear built by an Australian woman. The bears have been rescued from poachers who put them in cages to be sold later and killed for their bile used in Chinese medicine. What a shame. The center was really well explained and the bears were so cute and in a good shape. Proche des chutes de Kuang Si, il y avait également un centre d’ours de la lune rescapés construit par une femme australienne. Les ours ont été délivrés de leurs braconniers qui les mettaient en cage afin de les vendre pour qu’ils soient tués. Ceci dans le but de récupérer leur bile pour des médicaments chinois. Quelle honte! Le centre était pédagogue et les ours trop mignons semblaient tous heureux et en bonne santé.

We had lunch near the exit of the Kuang Si falls and it was really good. Coming back slowly to Luang Prabang we enjoyed riding our scooter among the rice fields, temples with a big sun and blue sky. Then, we had our sleeping bus to go to Huay Xai, at the far west of Laos, near Thailand border. We wanted to go to that small village because we booked a 3-days-trip of trekking and zip lining in order to see the Gibbons while sleeping in giant tree houses. De retour à Luang Prabang, nous avons apprécié se balader en scooter au milieu des champs de riz, des temples avec un beau soleil et ciel bleu. Enfin, nous avions notre bus de nuit pour aller à Huay Xai, tout à l’ouest du Laos, à côté de la frontière de la Thaïlande. Nous voulions aller dans ce village car nous avons réservé un trip de 3 jours de trek et de tyrolienne pour essayer de voir des gibbons et dormir dans une maison dans les arbres.
