Malapascua Island or how to dive with sharks

Hello everyone, after coming back from Bohol, we had one night in Cebu town to catch a bus in the morning. It was about to be a long way to reach Malapascua island. About 5 hours to first reach Maya on the North part of Cebu island and then 30 min of bangka boat to arrive at Malapascia Island. We took a local Yellow Ceres bus without air condition from Cebu to Maya and the bus was really full of people stopping every 100m. That is the reason why it was very long. We only did 150 kms in 5 hours! Even some people were standing up in the aisle as there were no more sit available. At the end, we were so eager to get there.

Coucou tout le monde, après être revenus de l’île de Bohol, nous avons passé la nuit à Cebu pour prendre un bus au petit matin. Nous avions un long trajet pour rejoindre l’île de Malapascua. Environ 5 heures pour aller à Maya au nord de l’île de Cebu et ensuite 30 minutes de bangka pour arriver à Malapascua. Nous avons pris un bus local Yellow Ceres sans climatisation de Cebu jusque Maya et le bus était plein à craquer. Il s’arrêtait tous les 100 mètres. C’est la raison pour laquelle le trajet était super long. On a parcourus seulement 150kms en 5 heures ahah. Même certaines personnes faisaient le trajet debout dans l’allée centrale du bus tellement il n’y avait plus de place. A la fin, on était bien contents d’être arrivés.

Once we arrived in Maya we didn’t wait that much for the boat. Another small boat to disembark on the beach and we were arrived, finally! Une fois arrivés à Maya, nous n’avons pas attendus longtemps pour le bateau. Une autre petite barque à moteur pour désembarquer sur la place et ça y est, on y est enfin !!

The island was really small 3 square km so it was so good to just walk to our hotel and visit a bit by foot. Our hostel was near the market place and as we were starving after this long trip, we decided to try one of those small and typical restaurants. L’île était très petite, 3 kilomètres carrés donc c’était trop cool de n’avoir qu’à marcher pour rejoindre notre hôtel ou juste visiter à pied. Notre auberg e de jeunesseétait proche de la place du marché et on était affamés après ce long trajet. Du coup, on a testé un des petits restaurants typiques de la place.

We also booked our dives as Malapascua island is famous for its threshed sharks, yes sharks! You read well! We could see those sharks by diving at 30 meters deep. So we had to do previous dives before this one. So we booked a trip with French Kiss Dive Center to Gato Island in two days and then we could see the sharks at Monad the third day. Nous avons également réservé nos plongés en bouteille comme l’île de Malapascua est réputée pour ses requins-renards. Oui oui, vous lisez bien ! On peut voir ces requins en plongeant à 30 mètres de profondeur. Par conséquent, nous devions d’abord faire d’autres plongées avant celle-ci. On a donc réservé une journée avec le centre de plongée français, French Kiss, pour aller sur l’île de Gato dans 2 jours et ensuite nous pourrions aller voir les requins à Monad le 3ème jour.

As we had no dive the day after, we enjoyed walking around the island. We met some local people in their small villages and we found a private beach where we could snorkel a bit and see a Japanese wreck. On that beach, we met French people coming from Britany, yes Britany! They are everywhere ahah. We had a really good time with them and we also spent the evening with them at our favourite place, the sunset bar, just above our diving center. Comme nous n’avions pas de plongées le jour suivant, on en a profité pour marcher sur l’île. Nous avons rencontré des locaux dans leurs petits villages. Nous sommes tombés sur une petite plage privée où on pouvait faire du snorkeling et aller voir une épave japonaise. Sur cette plage, on a rencontré des français venant de Bretagne, oui Bretagne. Les bretons sont partout !! ahah Nous avons passé un super moment avec eux et même une soirée à notre endroit préféré, le sunset bar, juste au-dessus de notre centre de plongée.

As I said, we can see the sharks at 30m deep, so we had to introduce ourselves to deep adventure diving before meeting the squalls. For this, we went to Gato island for a day where we could have two dives, one for deep adventure and one in a cave, so we had to introduce ourselves to night dive as well! So much to learn, pretty stressful but unbelievable. For the deep adventure, our fantastic guide Charlie did with us exercises in the depth such as the narcosis test. Then we could enjoy our fun dive that morning. After a quick but succulent lunch cooked by local people on the boat, we could do our second dive, in a cave. Charlie also introduced us to the use of the torch and all the needed signals for good communication under the water into the dark. Moreover, the particularity of the cave is that we could see another type of sharks, the sharks with white tail. Diving in the cave was really particular, you must not be phobic with the darkness. We dived in two caves and we saw a 2.5m shark sleeping in the second one. We were super close, it was really impressive. We finished our fun dive by observing macro and we had the opportunity to see a frog fish, this is super rare as this is the only fish having legs. Coming back to the dive center, a quick jump into our pool and we enjoyed once more a sunset at the sunset bar and super good food at the market place.

Comme je le disais, pour pouvoir aller voir les requins à 30 mètres de profondeur, nous devions faire une introduction aux plongées profondes avant d’aller rencontrer les squalls. Pour cela, nous sommes allés sur l’ile de Gato pendant une journée où nous pouvions effectuer 2 plongées, une plongée profonde et une dans une cave. Nous devions donc également faire une introduction à la plongée nocturne ! Beaucoup à apprendre, assez stressant sur le moment, mais inoubliable. Pour la plongée profonde, notre guide Charlie nous a montré des exercices de profondeurs comme le test de narcose des fonds marins. A la fin des exercices on pouvait profiter de notre plongée. Après un déjeuner cuisiné par les locaux, rapide mais succulent sur le bateau, on a pu entamer la deuxième plongée, dans une cave. Charlie nous a expliqué comment utiliser une torche et tous les signaux nécessaires pour bien communiquer sous l’eau dans le noir. De plus, la particularité de cette cave, est que nous pouvions voir une autre race de requin, les requins à pointe blanche. Plonger dans une cave était très particulier. Il ne faut pas être claustrophobe. Nous avons traversé 2 caves et nous avons vu un requin de 2,5m qui dormait dans la 2ème cave. On était très proches, c’était vraiment impressionnant. On a terminé notre plongée en observant de la macro et on a eu la chance de voir un poisson grenouille. C’est assez rare de voir ce seul poisson ayant des pattes. De retour au centre de plongée, nous avons sauté dans la piscine de l’hôtel et nous avons une nouvelle fois profité du coucher de soleil au sunset bar puis d’un super dîner sur la place du marché.

This morning is the D-Day to meet the threshed sharks. We had to woke up early as the departure of the boat was at 4:45 a.m. We left by night and enjoyed a sunrise on the bangka boat, unforgettable. We dove in the ocean and we started to go deeper. We didn’t wait a long time to see our first shark, and then a second one, and again another one… It was crazy! Bonus of the dive, we also saw two modula rays, they were enormous. This was stunning, they were really sumptuous. On our way back to the boat, one shark accompanied us, and stayed with us like 5 minutes. Super impressive. This dive was completely insane, unbelievable, the best memory ever!! I still can’t believe it. Totally, we saw 15 sharks and two rays. Our guide never saw that neither, he told us that it was his best dive ever. We had been so lucky!! Ce matin, c’est le jour J pour rencontrer les requins renards. Nous avons du nous lever très tôt pour un départ en bateau à 4:45 du matin. On est partis de nuit et on a eu la chance de voir un lever de soleil sur une bangka, inoubliable. On a plongé dans l’océan et on a commencé à aller plus profond. On n’a pas attendu longtemps pour voir notre premier requin, puis un deuxième, et encore un autre… C’était fou ! Bonus de la plongée, on a également deux raies modula, elles étaient énormes. C’était incroyable, les requins étaient somptueux. Sur le chemin retour au bateau, un requin nous a accompagné, et il est resté avec nous au moins 5 minutes. Super impressionnant. Cette plongée était dingue, tarée, folle, inoubliable, le meilleur moment de notre voyage !!! Je n’y crois toujours pas parfois. Au total, on a vu 15 requins et 2 raies. Notre guide n’avait jamais vu ça, il nous disait que c’était l’une de ses meilleurs plongées à Malapascua. On a été tellement chanceux d’en voir autant !!!

7:00 a.m., we were back at the dive center, still with no words how to describe what we lived, saw, felt… We took a boat back to Maya and then a van back to Cebu (a bit more expensive but really faster than the bus ahah). We didn’t wait at all, we jumped in another bus to go straight to Moalboal, famous for its sardine banc. The next post about it will come soon, be patient. With love.
