The Doubtful Sounds, kayak trip in the remote Fiordlands

After our bungy jump, we went to the Fiordland National Park. We decided to have a kayak trip in the Doubtful Sounds and not in the famous Milford Sounds after having discussed with our nice neighbors in Wanaka’s camping. We believed them and followed their advice. We had not been disappointed at all!! We booked our trip with the company ‘Orange 2go’ at the visitor center of the Manapouri lake. The departure was at 7:00 a.m. the day after. An early start to fully enjoy the day. We took a one-hour boat by night and enjoyed a sunrise on the Manapouri lake. The colours were unbelievable, blue, pink, yellow, orange, red…

Après nos sauts à l’élastique, nous sommes allés au parc national des Fiords. Nous avons décidé de faire un trip en kayak dans les Doubtful Sounds et non pas dans les plus connues Milford Sounds après avoir été conseillés par nos supers voisins au camping de Wanaka. Nous les avons cru, et suivi leur conseil. On n’a pas été déçus !!! Nous avons réservé notre trip avec la compagnie “Orange 2go” au centre d’information du lac Manapouri. Le départ était prévu à 7h du matin le jour suivant. C’était un démarrage assez tôt pour bien profiter toute la journée. Nous avons pris un bateau pendant une heure de nuit, et avons profité d’un lever de soleil sur le lac. Les couleurs étaient incroyables, bleu, rose, jaune, orange, rouge…

Then, we had to take a bus for one hour again on unsealed roads. It is a long way to go to remote places. Once arrived, our guide explained us the different gears and the journey. Ready to go for 3 hours of kayak. The first landscapes of the Fiords were amazing, really peaceful. We could hear that preserved area with its birds and wildlife. We learnt a lot about the Fiords and its wildlife thanks to our passionate guide. So interesting. Ensuite, nous devions prendre un bus pour encore une heure sur route non goudronnées. C’était un long chemin pour atteindre cet endroit reculé. Une fois arrivés, notre guide nous a expliqué les différents équipements et le déroulement du trajet. Enfin prêts pour 3 heures de kayak. Les premiers paysages des Fiords étaient époustouflants, c’était très calme. Nous pouvions écouter cet endroit préservé ses oiseaux et sa vie sauvage. Nous avons également beaucoup appris sur les Fiords et sa vie grâce à notre guide sincèrement passionné. Vraiment intéressant.

We were pretty disconnected with everything when we went back to the city, to the reality after this peaceful and calm kayak trip. We are really small on earth. We really thank our camping neighbors for their so good advice. We don’t regret at all!! Compared to the Milford Sounds where we went few days after, it was too crowded and there was too much noise (impolite Chinese tourists, cruise boats…) Nous étions assez déconnectés quand nous sommes revenus à la ville, à la réalité après ce calme et apaisant trip en kayak. On est vraiment petit sur terre. On remercie sincèrement nos voisins de nous avoir conseillé ce trip. On a adoré !!! Comparés aux Milford Sounds où nous sommes allés le lendemain, nous avons trouvé ça trop blindé de touristes et de bateaux de croisières. Trop bruyants comparé à la veille !
